Ancient literature surviving through the ancient period. Ancient literature was composed in the age before the printing press. Only way to get text was to make it by hand. Anything produced by paper in the ancient world will not survive. Texts must be copied then recopied to work. Medieval transmission presupposes a number of factors: The intro of writing (the greek alphabet), songs can be produced. The development of a book trade (end of 5th century b. c) idea of writing ideas down became popular. The texts that survived are manuscripts that have been recopied (however, none will be identical) The consolidation of ancient texts in the library of alexandria after 307 b. c (cid:523)center of culture(cid:524) (cid:498)shrine of the muses(cid:499) museum. The preservation of the greek and latin texts in medieval monasteries etc. Alphabet has been adapted (greek alphabet still used today as the descendent) Pictograph- hieroglyphics (need a key to figure out what each picture stands for)
