He wanted to attack the carthaginian fleet but the romans had to see if the gods favored the attack or not which involved a test using sacred chickens. In the first punic war the romans weren(cid:859)t experienced and the reason the chickens did(cid:374)(cid:859)t eat because chickens aren(cid:859)t conformable eating on boats. Due to this claudius threw the chickens over board and attacked anyway and lost 93 ships after losing this battle greatly. Cladius was arrested when he got back because he went against the gods wasn(cid:859)t about losing the battle but defying the capital crime of going against the chicken test. The trial happened in the outdoors and was completed in a single day but there was a storm that day so the trail was abandoned which lead to claudius being acquitted.
