Characters: odysseus, penelope, telemachus, circe, calypso, zeus, poseidon, Odysseus is forced to leave his homeland of ithaca to ght in the trojan war. After the war concludes, he and his comrades sail home. They encounter the giant polyphemus on their way home and are captured, but odysseus using his cunning wit to get out of the situation. However, his hubris gets the best of him and he announces his name as they leave the island, dooming himself and his friends to a lengthy ten year journey home. Hospitality in these times, hospitality was very important as it showed the character and ethic of a person. Arriving strangers may be dangerous or harmless, and residents are wise to be prepared for trouble. Civilized people make an investment in hospitality to demonstrate their quality as human beings and in hopes that their own people will be treated well when they travel.
