How did it form: originally formed in the inner solar system. Asteroids were distributed more or less uniformly in the inner solar system but when the planets began to form, the geometry was changed greatly. Some met a fatal end and fathered the planets, while the other were flung either inward or outward, ending up under the influence of jupiter. The sun and jupiter"s gravity determined the position of the asteroids greatly and restricted them to a zone. Law, but please be aware that such a law exists what does it allow us to predict: gives the approximate distances of planets from the sun. Jupiter"s influence which kept them in a zone between mars and jupiter: what are the kirkwood gaps, gaps in the main asteroid belt where gravitational disruptions are particularly strong. Due to jupiter and the sun"s gravity, the asteroids are flung either inward or outward leaving behind a gap.
