Midterm: monday feb 13: lecture 1 & introductory chapter. Roots of the word geography are greek. Means - description of the world" or writing about the world". Interested in differences and variations in the world. Human geography studies the distribution of humans and their activities on the surface of the earth and the processes that generate these distributions. What is where, why there, and why care? (gritzner) How people decide where to live, why do we have high income areas vs. low areas etc. Central subject matter is human behaviour on a landscape. Three themes of (human) geography: relations between humans and land, regionalization, spatial analysis. * things we do to modify the landscape. Human world is the ever-changing product of human activity to modify the pre-existing physical conditions of the earth. As individuals, and as group members working together within human and institutional frameworks (ie communities, governments)
