The area consists of two physiographic region: the appalachian uplands and the canadian shield. Mariimes: and the islands of nflnd are located in the appalachian uplands; labrador is located on the canadian shield. The appalachian uplands: are ancient, eroded mountain chain. Over millions of years, streams have cut deeply into the land resuling in hilly terrain with rugged areas. The most prominent featured are the torngat mountains formed 750 million years ago.
