Geography 2011A/B Study Guide - Quiz Guide: Northern Ontario, Meed, Right To Play
Document Summary
In my opinion, the future of northern ontario is bleak, and i have little optimism for success in the region. Currently, northern ontario is littered with far too many problems, and although it may be possible for several to be addressed and resolved, resolution of all problems is nearly impossible. Furthermore, success would require far too many prerequisites, including extreme external financial support, political restructuring, economic diversification, support from northern ontarians, industry and the ontario government, and shear luck. Before considering specific issues, the odds are stacked against the region. The north has a harsh physical geography, including extreme winters, physical isolation from the rest of. Ontario, as well as abnormal darkness cycles that detract business and inhabitants. Furthermore, the current political arrangement is unorganized and fragmented, with 145 municipalities, 102 first nations and 150 unincorporated communities each with their own governing bodies. Any proposed changes would first require political unity, which would need abundant cooperation and compromise (unlikely).
