Edwin sutherland first introduced the concept of white-collar crime in 1939. Edwin"s definition of white-collar crime: crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation. Sutherland was calling attention to the fact that individuals committed criminal acts from all social and economic classes (people from respected jobs commit crimes as well) He wanted to study them because they caused a lot of harm but also tended to escape persecution due to their respectability or affluence. White-collar crime is a serious problem in our society and far more is lost to white-collar crimes than to traditional property crimes. White-collar offenses have the potential to cause serious physical and emotional damage to victims. White-collar offenses affect everyone and they tend to have a large number of victims.
