Lecture 1 the middle ages are classified in the late roman empire, so 250-476. After actual historical research, it i seen that it actually has great progress. In the 60s then recreate their ideals on the medieval ages. Critical elements: greco roman legacy, barbarians seek to imitate and build on this legacy, influence of christianity and church, direction of ordinary people. The popular conception of serfdom was that they were poor, oppressed and tethered to the land. Current view of serfdom: in the 60s, revisions began. They created a typical day in the life and it shattered the old ideals: they are now seen as customary tenants. Economic life of a serf: they were not exploited, their labor rents never went up, serfdom benefitted everyone. Customary farms: open fields, furliongs and strip farms, it was a good income, soil types was good since they moved things around. Social life of a serf: childhood: play and educations.
