It showed the poor living conditions for the poor, and the extravagant homes of the wealthy: president rutherford b. hayes reformed the federal government by targeting patronage, the practice of appointing friends and political supporters to public office. Significance- alger s novels were very popular in the 1880s and encouraged middle class americans to read. Significance- the gilded age was an important era in american history. It showed how wealth could be so unfairly distributed: thomas edison: identify- an inventor who revolutionized america by creating inventions such as low cost electric light bulb, the phonograph, the dictation machine, the movie camera, and polaroid cement. Significance- these inventions helped boost industrialization of america.
