It works independently of all the others parts of the body; it can beat intrinsically; beats by itself and generates its own heart beat. As long as the heart is able to get sufficient nutrients (oxygen), it can beat for days. During rest & digest, the heart is controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system; while during fight or flight, it is controlled by sympathetic nervous system. It is located anteriorly within the thoracic cage, behind the sternum, (center of the chest), but off on an angle. It has an apex that points downwards (bottom left of the chest) The vessels that run to and from the heart are all situated on top of the heart region called the base of the heart. Top of the heart is between t3-t4 and it extends to t9 (bottom of the heart) If the xiphoid process were to break, it could potentially puncture the heart.
