Big 5 inventory
Developed by Goldberg in 1993 to measure the five divisions
44 items that measure each factor through its corresponding facet
The five- factor model and exercise behaviour
Exercises of the big 5
Limited research
Extraversion and conscientiousness seem to be associated with positive exercise behaviours
The key personality trait explaining exercise participation may be a sub-trait of
extraversion called the activity trait
The activity trait reflects a tendency to be busy, energetic and prefer fast- paced living
The trait is reliable and strong predictor of PA
Intensity preferences and tolerance
Genetically determined traits
Intensity preference is a predisposition to select a particular exercise intensity when given
the opportunity
Intensity tolerance is a trait that influences one's ability to keep exercising at an imposed
level of intensity even when the activity becomes uncomfortable

Only pages 1-3 are available for preview. Some parts have been intentionally blurred.

Both constructs are associated with fitness levels and exercise enjoyment
Keep exercising at really, really high levels
Those people at the gym that just won't stop despite injury (or other reason), they are
probably really high in intensity preference and tolerance (they enjoy the pain)
Person- situation debate
Person perspective or trait approach:
o Personality is derived from stable, enduring attributes that lead to consistent
responses over time/situations
Situation approach
o Behaviour is best explained by individual's reaction to environment
Debate led to the interactionist perspective to studying personality:
o Both individuals and the situations in which they find themselves are important in
determining behavior
You may change your personality based on who you're interacting with and in what
environment
OTHER PERSONALITY FACTORS IN EXERCISE RESEARCH
Sex-role oriented
o Type of activity and how much activity would be heavily affected
Masculine: more weights; feminine: more cardio
Masculinity: Instrumental personality
more risk- taking, independent, aggressive, competitive
Feminine: Expressive personality
understanding, sympathetic, affectionate, compassionate
o Androgynous: possess high level of both masculine and feminine
o Cross gender activities are generally avoided by gender- typed individuals because of
psychological discomfort
Type A behaviour pattern
o Relation to exercise: needs to be done their way, wouldn’t follow an exercise program
if it doesn’t suit them, more likely to set harder goals for themselves
o Coronary- prone personality
o Anger/ hostility are important features for increased risk of cardiovascular disease
o Exercise has been shown to be effective in reducing this behavior pattern as well as
cardiovascular disease (but results of studies are not uniform: either can't get them to
adhere or when they do adhere their personality comes out and they can't fight
disease)
