Legit music types: from lowest to highest pitched voice: Voices have strong parallels with character types. Usually the lower the voice, the older the character. Book musicals tells a story while revues are a collection of acts sometime with a theme, sometimes completely disparate. Book musicals go by many names: comic operas, operettas, musical comedy, musical play etc. Revues have their roots in variety, vaudeville, music halls and minstrel shows: started out as something you would see in vaudeville, vaudeville = variety show. Started out as a variety show where all the acts have nothing to do with each other. People who have separate acts don"t even know each other. Big grand stories: comic operetta it"s all domestic stories (little), stories people could relate to, silly. Eventually people stopped being interested in tragic opera but came specifically to see what was going on in comic operas.
