Modern: carr (1939) --> british diplomat, how ir came about; more academic; mongenthan (1948) --> similar to hobbes, not everyone has good intensions, role of power. Neorealism: sceptic over corporations; waltz (1979); structural realism; bi-poral world. States sovereign, monopoly of power --> key actors of ir. The (rational) actions of states are driven by their quest for power & the pursuit of their national interest. In global system you dont have a global system --> state has look for itself. What counts is realtive power (ir as zero-sum game) Hierarchy of power & issues: primary of military power --> primacy. -> should not be led by moral principles.
