Document Summary

For professor nig narain & t. a katie grant. The political tug-of-war between a person"s individual rights and the government"s moral duty to protect its citizens is the root argument in regards to legalized gambling in canada. Unfortunately due to its high-risk high-pay nature, gambling can trigger unhealthy habits that may lead to addiction. A gambling addiction can cause seriously harmful, and possibly permanent, emotional and financial issues to the addict. The upside of gambling however, is its contribution to the canadian economy. A gross amount of revenue obtained from the gambling industry is used to fund provincial programs such as education and health. Programs, i should add, that are funded by involuntary taxes. I argue that the current law which permits government operated gambling for adults is justified because the removal of this policy would inflict greater harm on society then if it were left intact.
