Normative: provide an argument using norms and values about how something ought to be. Critical: provide concepts and methods that help us to see our current society as unfree or unjust; the point is not only to understand society, but to change it. Week 2 - socrates & the role of the critical citizen. Concerned with ethics and how people carried themselves. Wanted to approach philosophy with a worldly perspective. Socratic method approaching thought with questioning (approaching other arguments with questions) Charges include: busy body - overturning common sense, not believing in the gods of athens, corrupting the minds of the youth.
