Document Summary

Chapter 5 study guide: sensation is the stimulation of the sensory receptors. Perception is the organization of sensory input and giving the input meaning. transduction is the process of translating the physical, environmental stimulus into electrical signal. Humans have more than 5 senses (vision, hearing, taste, touch, smell, balance, body position, temperature, and receptors: absolute threshold is the lowest intensity necessary for a stimulus to be detected. The lower the threshold, the more sensitive we are to the stimulus. The difference threshold is the smallest difference between two stimuli that people can detect 50% of the time. The basic idea of weber"s law is that every stimulus type has a different fraction/proportion. As stimuli get more intense, difference must also increase for us to perceive it. Perceived line length matches, pain increases, brightness decreases: the four possible outcomes in a signal detection task are hit (present, yes), false alarm (absent, yes), miss (present, no), and correct rejection (absent, no).
