Document Summary

Developmental psychology: the forward thrust of life ; the study of growth and changes in behaviour of organisms from conception to death. Cross-sectional design: comparing people of different ages at the same time. Cohorts: different groups banded together (ex. different age groups) Longitudinal design: repeatedly testing cohorts as time progresses. Repeatedly testing several cohorts as time progresses. Growth: normal qualitative changes in physiological aspects of an organism over time. Maturation: chemical/physical changes over which individuals have little or no control. Learning: relatively permanent changes in behaviour from experience, observation, practice Motor behaviours ex. sitting require back muscle maturation and environment opportunity. Attempts to describe the interaction between internal and external unfolding process. Hypothesis is that normal development proceeds in a series of phases marked by increased receptivity towards certain environmental conditions. What happens at each stage is believed to have effect on development/learning potential. Corresponds to time period of most rapid development.
