Attachment: close, enduring emotional bond to parents or other primary caregivers. A child has an innate need to attach to one main attachment figure there should be a primary bond to the caregiver which is much more important than any other. Attachment is different in kind (qualitatively different) from any other attachments. A child should receive the continuous care of this single most important attachment figure for approximately the first two years of life. If the attachment figure is broken or disrupted during the critical period the child will suffer long-term consequences. Maternal deprivation: separation/ loss of the mother, failure to develop an attachment. Short term separation from an attachment figure leads to distress. Protest: child cries, screams and protests angrily when the parent leaves, tries to cling on to the parent to stop them leaving. Despair: (cid:272)hild appears to (cid:271)e (cid:272)al(cid:373)er although still upset, refuses others" atte(cid:373)pts for comfort and often seems withdrawn and uninterested in anything.
