Chapter 9 humanistic, existential, positive aspects of personality. Relations with other people define our humanness: emphasis on beings active, aware quality of humans. Life develops as people create worlds for themselves: movement from human being to humans becoming personality active t toward self- fulfillment, humanistic approach adopts existential idea that existence comes from relation with other people. I-thou dialogue (buber) direct, mutual relationship in which each person confirms other person as being of unique value. I-it monologue utilitarian relationship in which person uses others but does not value them: argument in a religious context but many humanistic focus on spiritual w/o religious context. The human potential movement: human potential movement existential-humanistic movement in which people encouraged to realize inner potentials through small group meetings, self-disclosure, introspection. 1970s hippie movement body massage, meditation, consciousness-raising, organic, nature: today environmentalism, grass-roots democracy, civil liberties, worker dignity, unselfish fulfill. Love as a central focus of life: erich fromm.
