Anhedonia: feel little joy in anything they do and lose interest in nearly all activities. Irritability: easy annoyance and touchiness, angry mood and temper = one of the most common cooccurring symptom of depression. The symptoms of depression are so universal that it is sometimes called the common cold of psychopathology. 6 universal emotions: disgust, joy, sad, anger, fear, surprise. These are considered universal because: cross culturally show the same emotions, babies show the same emotions and the complexity only increases with age. World trends of death rates and burden show that depression is among the top three highest in the world. Pervasive unhappy mood: more severe than the occasional blues or mood swings everyone experiences. Children who are depressed cannot shake their sadness because it: Masked depression: thought that kids didn"t have depression. Children do experience depression, but it is sometimes overlooked because it co- occurs with more visible disorders.
