psych 2075 chapter 1- sexuality in perspective
sex and gender!
-the word sex is often used ambiguously, but in this book it will be used to describe
sexual anatomy and sexual behaviour and the term gender will describe the state of
being male or female.!
-in this book sexual behaviour will be describe behaviour that produces arousal and
increases chance of orgasm !
influences on sexuality !
-religion!
-source of many values and ethics regarding sexuality and thus has a powerful
influence on sexual attitudes !
-every religion is unique in their moral code so they believe dierent things are
right or wrong !
-up until about 100 years ago, most of the info on sexuality came from religion,
and some cultures, it is still based on religion!
-ancient greeks openly acknowledged hetero and homosexuality in their society
and explained the existence in a myth in which original humans were double
creatures with twice the normal number of limbs and organs and some were half
male half female and so they were split by god which made the soul mates but
some of the people who were searching for their other half were 2 male halves
or 2 female halves !
-15th century christians believed that wet dreams were caused by intervource
with incubi and succubi !
-over the centuries muslims have believed that sexual interocurse is one of the
finest pleasures of life, reflecting the teachings of the great muhammad.
sexuality is regarded primarily as a source of pleasure and only secondary as a
means of reproduction. !

-born in 1950, youngest child in upper class nova scotia!

-his parents stressed education so he was going to go to university, and his
parents were very old fashioned !
-he realized at age 5 he was dierent than other childnre- he wasn't
interested in sports, and he was attracted to boys so he was a loner and
turned to art, reading, music and painting. he also wanted approval of
adults !
-he went to church every sunday even though religion wasn't huge in their
home and became drawn to it!
-his parents never spoke about sex so he never mentioned his sexuality and
he didn't have bad feelings about his sexual orientation but he sensed that
he shouldnt discuss with his parents or his priest. this made him
increasingly lonely as a teenager. !
-in university he had his sexual experimentation but in his 20s became
ordained as a priest for the anglican church so his sexuality went
“underground” !
-he spent years hiding his sexuality until he retired at 44
-science!
-scientific study of sex began in the 19th century !
-major advance in scientific understanding of psychological aspects of human
sexuality came with work of Freud. !
-Henry Havelock Ellis was another contributor to the study of sex. he was a
doctor in victorian englant and collected a vast amount of info on sexuality. he
believed women were also sexual creatures, not just men. !
-Richard von Krat-Ebing was another important figure. he specialized in
pathological sexuality. his work was neither objective nor tolerant but it has a
lasting impact. he created the concepts of sadism, masochism, and pedophilia !
-Magnus Hirschfeld founded the first sex research institute and administered the
first large scale sex survey but most go his findings were destroyed by the nazis !
-Alfred Kinsey had a major breakthrough in scientific understanding go sex with
the massive surveys of human and sexual behaviour in US. William Masters and
Virginia Johnson also created breakthroughs with investigations of sexual
disorders and the physiology of sexual response. !
