Find general behaviours within individuals based on the societal structures. In other words, the goals of sociology: Biography (micro-structure): everyone is a unique individual and mills says we must ob- serve someone and hear their story before judgment. Deals with human agency which is the ability to act. Milieu (meso-): deals with ones immediate community and their sense of belonging, or gemein (from the german gemeinschaft). Structuration theory- founded by anthony giddens, it says that we are both products and producers in our society and therefore we have a double involvement in society: ex. We produce change by how we raise a child, while we are products because we were socialized by our parents, environment, media etc. when we were children. According to a study by durkheim, higher suicide rates can be traced back to levels of social solidarity within a group (higher social solidarity=lower suicide rates) Occurs in settings of low social soli- darity.
