Chapter 1: the science of society: lecture 1. Politics- distribution of power- gender, race, gender < differential amounts of power. Sociologists try to make sense of that noisy blur of the human activity called, society . Try to define, describe, explain, and interpret human behaviour with the contexts of social groups and institutions. A sociologist is interested in primarily in general and recurrent behaviour patterns, whether in small groups, specific social institutions, and regions of a country or entire societies. Insights are drawn from history, history is understood, as a social process that has generated a stock of knowledge relating to past failures and triumphs, is thus a lucrative repository of information. Task of a sociologist is to identify the pattern of social convention and then explain why it persists or dies out. Enlightenment: interested in the science and rationality.
