July 19th, 2005: bill c-38 passed to grant marriage licenses to same sex couples. Netherlands became the first country to legalize gay marriage in 2001. Polygamy: form of marriage in which one person may have two or more spouses. Changing patterns and structures in canadian families and households. Census family: now married couple, a couple living common-law or without never married sons or daughters, or a lone parent of any marital status with at least one never-married child living in the same dwelling. 20% of children under 14 lived with lone parents in 2011; majority lone-female parents. Annual rate for both marriage and divorce has been declining since the 90"s. Remarriage is still most common after a divorce. Yet, this is declining, and cohabiting is increasing. Average age for marriage: 28 for women, 30 for men. 9/10 teens expect to get married and stay with that partner for life.
