Biomedical ethics is grounded in the study of moral philosophy. Bio ethics = a new discipline that combines biological knowledge with knowledge of human value systems. = the study of ethical dimensions of medicine and the biological systems. Before the 2nd half of 20th century , nonmaleficence and beneficence were paternalistic. Its about what is due or owed to persons in terms of the distribution of benefits and burdens among them. Should doctors be prohibited from assisting terminally ill patients in committing suicide. So reason outweighs any opposing reason for not acting or implementing a policy: an action/policy is prohibited if there is an ethically decisive reason against it, and action/policy is permitted if there"s no ethically decisive reason against it. Normative ethics: concerned with how people ought to act, what sort of person one ought to be or what policies ought to be implemented. Specifies the norms of right and wrong actions/behaviours.
