Document Summary

Individuals and variables: an individual is a person or object on which an observation is made. They are sometimes known as experimental units or sampling units. A variable is any characteristic of the individual. The variable can take on different values for different individuals: we observe or measure the value of the variable of interest for each individual. What can be counted is the count or proportion of individuals in each category: example: your blood type (a, b, ab, o), your hair colour, your ethnicity, whether you paid income tax last year or not. Exploring data: begin by examining each variable by itself. Then move on to study the relationships among the variables: begin with a graph or graphs. Then add numerical summaries of specific aspects of the data. Distribution of a variable: the distribution of a variable describes what values the variable take on and how often, the values of a categorical variable are labels for the categories.
