Gender refers to personality traits, behaviours and attitudes attributed to or expected of individuals based on their sex (i. e. feminine/masculine). These binaries are put in place when there are only two options for sex/gender, while anything that challenges this definition of male or female is resisted in society. We often apply gender to ourselves based on sex, but people who do not fit into these specific assumptions are considered less feminine or masculine.
