Document Summary

Explain the prisoner"s dilemma and how it illustrates the shortcomings of what gaulthier calls the straightforward utility maximisation strategy. The prisoner"s dilemma is a situation with 2 persons; me and ted. We have both been arrested and charged for a crime we did not commit. We are both being interviewed in different rooms so that we can"t know what the other one is saying. Both of us are being pressed to confess because if we do, we will each get 5 years in prison. If one of us confesses, the person who does will be sentenced to 1 year, while the other one who did not confess will get 10. If neither of us confesses, we will each do 2 years. Now, the straightforward strategy which we are using to solve this dilemma was created by gaulthier as a strategy for always looking out for ourselves.
