Harvey graff- early modern literacies reformation & printing press. Protestant reformation one of the greatest positive forces towards spread of literacy and schooling. Can also be described as educational reform movement - decided religious and moral improvement should be taught in public schools. Triggered by martin luther"s ninety-five thesis in 1518. All movements looked to secular authority for aid, took inspiration from the bible and appealed to the early church. Religious issues were most important with the printing press. Humanism benefited from printing, urban and articulate commercial classes and increasing literate laity. Martin luther"s own reform began as a university based effort to transform the curriculum, replacing aristotle and scholasticism with the bible: helped his thesis circulate rapidly. Many political changes helped with these major adjustments. Two most significant developments were the contribution of the printing press and the use of vernacular. First propaganda campaign in germany thanks to the printing press.
