Three mile island 1979- nuclear plant in pennsylvania experiences partial meltdown, broken valve allowed coolant to escape (human errors compound matters), radioactive waste released to river; no deaths reported. Chernobyl 1986- soviet-built reactor explodes during maintenance testing, thirty killed, thousands exposed to high levels of radiation causing cancers, illness. Fukushima 2011- coastal nuclear power plant hit by a tsunami which knocked out the cooling pumps, one of the reactors overheated and a radiation cloud was released, no deaths caused by meltdown; 300,000 were evacuated.
