Disposal of nuclear wastes- no effective solution has been devised for long term management/ disposal of nuclear wastes, -typically stored in above ground pools of water or concrete-steel containers. Nuclear wastes in ontario-high level wastes stored in water pools for up to 10 years,then loaded into concrete-steel containers for above ground storage, current proposal to bury them underground near kincardine in bedrock. Three mile island 1979- nuclear plant in pennsylvania experiences partial meltdown, broken valve allowed coolant to escape (human errors compound matters), radioactive waste released to river; no deaths reported. Chernobyl 1986- soviet-built reactor explodes during maintenance testing, thirty killed, thousands exposed to high levels of radiation causing cancers, illness. Fukushima 2011- coastal nuclear power plant hit by a tsunami which knocked out the cooling pumps, one of the reactors overheated and a radiation cloud was released, no deaths caused by meltdown; 300,000 were evacuated. Can produce a lot of electricity at one spot.
