Families are particularly parents played a key role in elite athlete development as they progressed through sampling, specializing, and investment years. In sampling children participated in many sports. In specialization parents encouraged children to focus on a limited number of sports. In investment years children focus on deliberate practice in effort to ensure pursuit of excellence. Little pressure is placed on children in these years.
