Document Summary

Prosocial behaviour is defined as any act performed with the intent of helping another person. There are four main categories of prosocial behaviour that we will consider in this course: Casual helping (e. g. , lending someone a pen, giving someone directions, holding a door open for someone, low-cost emotional support (i. e. laughing at a joke) Substantial personal helping (e. g. providing a demanding or personal service such as doing laundry; looking after someone"s pet, picking up someone"s child from school) Emotional helping (e. g. , providing moral support or comfort, listening to a problem ( being there for someone) Emergency helping (e. g. , helping an accident victim, returning a lost wallet, pushing a car out of the snow) Altruism is one type of prosocial behaviour. There are different theories that explain why people help. Some researchers believe that people help because they are truly altruistic.
