Document Summary

Question: define, describe, briefly analyze the social significance, and provide a concrete example of two of the following concepts (5 marks each). Answers should be 7-10 sentences in length: total institution. Total institutions are settings in which people are isolated from the larger society and are put under strict control and constant supervision. Total institutions are socially significant because they are a key technique of resocialization, which takes place when powerful socializing agents deliberately cause rapid change in people"s values, roles, and self-conception. An example is the prison system; criminals are forced to wear similar clothing, follow a strict routine, are monitored 24/7, and have little freedom: anomie. Anomie is a social condition in which there is a disintegration of the norms and values that were previously common to society. Anomie occurs during periods of drastic and rapid changes to the social, economic, or political structures of society.
