Community Engagement Case Study:
The Chennai Urban Population Study (Chennai, India,
1997-2004)
Intervention: The intervention activities included:
individual counselling for those at high risk for diabetes,
mass awareness campaigns that included public lectures,
videos, short skits and educational materials; and gentle
encouragement about the importance of physical activity
delivered by a social worker who visited the colonies. The
interventions included weekly health education lectures,
interactive sessions every two months, public lectures
every three months and educational materials printed in
English and Tamil delivered to all households every six
months.
The Role of a Community Coalition: After three years of
continuous awareness programs, the community
recognized the importance of physical activity and took
matters into their own hands recognizing the need for a
park. The community led by the committee raised money
for, identified land, and received local government
permission to build a park (raising Rs. 15,000,000 or US$
34,000) from government resources, philanthropists and
residents to build the park.
Direct Results: Statistically significant increases in
physical activity levels among colony residents ( a 313%
increase in some form of exercise more than three times
a week— from 14.2% at baseline to 58.7% at follow up).
Indirect Results: Sharing study results with community
members and local governments led to the construction
of two additional parks in Chennai with community
