The organization’s goals, values and philosophy
What is the organization’s mission and focus? Before
committing to any organization/project, do your
homework. Research and contact the
organizations/projects you’re interested in, and learn as
much as you can. Review the website, speak to someone
at the organization, or set-up an appointment to meet
with someone face-to-face. Be prepared with a list of
questions, and pay attention to the “vibe” while you’re
there. You may even be able to speak with current or
past volunteers.
The organization’s expectations
What do they expect from you? It’s very important to
have a clear understanding of what will be expected of
you with respect to 1) time commitment, 2) tasks 3)
responsibility and 4) professional image (i.e., dress). The
more information you gather, the better informed you
will be to select the placement that is right for you.
Criteria/qualifications/skills
What qualifications and criteria do you need to meet?
Verify if there are any criteria you need to meet in order
to volunteer. For example, many schools and
organizations that cater to children will require that
submit a police record check. Some organizations may
require lifting or walking for long periods of time (e.g.,
canvassing). Other organizations/projects will require
particular skills such as good listening skills, patience,
compassion and empathy (e.g., Crisis Centers, Hospitals,
Schools).
