What would I do if?
In this assignment, you will be asked to anticipate how you would feel, and act, in
various volunteer situations. First, I would like you to read through all the scenarios
below.
Scenarios:
1) Being a new volunteer, John was very excited to begin his volunteer work at a sports
day-camp for under-privileged children. He was partnered with a more experienced
volunteer, Jan, and together, they were responsible for a group of 12, 6-7 year old
children. One day, as the group was sitting down to eat lunch, one child started yelling
at another child. He then began to kick and punch the other child. Jan looked at John,
and said “Can you go deal with that?” John had not received any training with regards to
aggressive children.
2) Isabelle has always been interested in sustainable organic farming. Someday, she
would like to have her own farm, complete with organic vegetables and fruits, as well as
some free-range chicken and pigs. To learn more about organic farming, and really get
her “hands dirty”, she decided she would like to volunteer on an organic farm. She did
some research, and found what looks like the perfect family farm; she thinks she will be
able to learn a lot. On her first day, she arrives at the farm eager to begin work. The
family’s 16-year old daughter, Morgan, comes out of the house to meet Isabelle, and
tells her that she will be showing her around. First, they tour the farm, and then Morgan
brings Isabelle to a back field. Morgan tells Isabelle that the field needs to be plowed,
and that Isabelle will be doing it. Isabelle, who has never driven a tractor before, says
that she is not sure how. Morgan tells Isabelle that if she can drive a car, she can drive
and tractor, but she needs to be careful, since the brakes do not work very well. She
says she will be back in hour.
3) Thomas has been volunteering at the local soup kitchen for a few weeks. Most of the
time, he serves food, welcomes clients or cleans up the tables. Today, one of the local
grocery stores is making a large donation of food and his supervisor asks if he could
help unload some of the food that has arrived. As Thomas heads out to the truck, he
sees large boxes full of food products. Thomas is afraid that he will not be strong
enough to lift the boxes, and may even hurt himself, but really wants to please his
supervisor.
4) For a few years, Sofia has volunteered for a local event benefitting adult literacy
programs. There are lots of activities taking place, including: music, children’s activities,
and games. Sofia will be taking on many jobs, but one of her tasks is to direct parking.
She is not looking forward to it, but agrees to do it anyway. She arrives just after lunch
time, a few minutes early. The volunteer leader tells her where to go, and lets her know
that someone will be come to replace her in a few hours. It is a very hot day – 28
degrees and getting hotter – and Sofia knows it will be even hotter in the parking lot
since there is no shade. She has told someone will bring her a bottle of water in a few
minutes. Three hours later, no one has brought her water, and Sofia is still directing
parking.
