UU150 Final: Confidentiality
Confidentiality
According to the Oxford Dictionary, confidential information is:
Intended to be kept secret
Synonyms: private, personal, intimate, privileged, quiet; secret,
top secret, sensitive, classified, restricted, non-
public, unofficial, off the record, not for publication, not for
circulation, not to be made public, not to be disclosed
(Source: Oxford Dictionary, 2014)
Think about why it is so important to keep information obtained
during community engagement experiences, whether it is
disclosed orally, visually, or on paper, confidential.
Remember, you may be working with vulnerable populations , but
even if you are not, remember that all people value their privacy,
and each of us is vulnerable. It is especially important to keep in
mind that the names and identifying information of community
members and clients at organizations cannot be revealed in
discussions or writing without specific prior written permission
from the individuals. Sensitive information about the
organization, its employees, and its activities is also confidential.
Remember not to post any information related to your placement
(photos, personal information or details) on your social
networking sites or anywhere they might be publically visible.
Reflect on This
What would you do?
You are out for coffee with some other students and you start
talking about one of the children at your placement that has
same sex parents who are in the midst of getting a divorce
because the one parent has had an affair. The one student you
are with becomes uncomfortable and shares that they think you
are taking about someone that they know.
