On the night before he and his brothers went to
meet with their teacher, his Mother explained that
here in Canada, the majority of individuals were
Christians or secularists. He and his brothers
laughed as they tried to pronounce the second
word in English. His brother Mohammed got it
pretty quickly although his own tongue was having
challenges making out some of the syllables.
His mother also told them that his father would be
taking business-level English just across town. He
had to take two busses to get there and there was
a wait in-between at a bus stop for about 30
minutes before the next one came to pick him up
for the rest of the journey. Both his mother and
father spoke enough English to get by. While some
of their trips to the store had been completed with
hand gestures and waving to get the point across,
his parents, though exhausted, were making huge
strides in Ali’s eyes. They could make it in this
country – even if they had to start from nothing.
At this point, Ali asked his mother where she was
going to school but his mother just shook her
head. “And where would your sister go, Ali? We
don’t know anyone here who can come and take
care of her while I sit in a classroom and (seeing
