The society of upper canada: government institution that chooses lawyers and takes away licenses. Gives opportunity for people to get 30 min of free consultation from a lawyer. Contingency fees: lawyer get a percentage of the win: personal injury cases, suing docs/hospitals. Block fee: a fee on the service that remains the same: real estate, corporate, wills. Legal aid: free lawyers for people that meet an income criteria: criminal law, family, immigration. Common law: judges make the law depending on a case: merged with equity (idea of fairness) Precedent: judges have to follow decisions of previous higher court decisions. Statutes law: government law: criminal code, partnership act, minimum wage, employment, *burden of proof: to decide whether someone is guilty and how sure you have to be. Lawyer: accused picks and pays for their own lawyer guilty, or else it(cid:495)s a mistrial(cid:524: you can choose not to have a jury.
