Introduction and background: considered to be the largest hazard in alberta"s history, the great havoc of slave lake wildfire took place on northern slave lake region on may 14th, 2011, The actual cause of this wildfire is still unknown. In this essay, by using the four-phase disaster management method (mitigation, response, preparedness and recovery), i will consider the alternative measures that could have ameliorated the disaster management in the case of slave lake, alberta. To identify whether this event is an emergency, catastrophe or disaster, i will begin by defining the three terms: An emergency is an event, which is usually unexpected. It puts at risk the life of at least one person. Emergencies can be of all scales as they may distress from a single individual up to an entire population of a community. An emergency is a situation during which there may be an impending crisis. However, it is always something that requires quick or immediate attention.
