Feburary 5 : Arranged Marriage?
In Anita Janin article entitled, Is Arranged Marriage Really Any Worse Than
Craigslist? she discusses the struggle with arrange marriage that modern Indian women;
throughout her article, she does not reject nor agree with the idea of arrange marriage.
Throughout the article she discusses the struggle of being a 32 year old, single women
and whether she should let her family find her a husband. She lives in New York and
discusses her story as being an American and Indian women and the values she deals with
being from both a Western and traditional culture. She decides to go back home (India) in
order to improve her dating opportunities and makes a connection to her father, when he
had left his homeland to move to America for better career opportunities. Janin mother
agrees strongly on arrange marriage and states, “It’s not that there isn’t love. It’s just that
it comes after marriage.” Janin also discuses the importance marriage has on a Indian
women’s life by stating that before children learn to say mom or dad, they are learned the
word shaadi (marriage). When she gets to India her expectations were nowhere what she
had expected; she was not getting any luck in finding a man. When she returns back to
America, she decides to try the arranged marriage route her parents have been talking
