Foucault"s analysis of the panopticon has been used to theorize surveillance. The panopticon is a type of institutional building designed by the english philosopher and social theorist jeremy bentham in the late 18th century. The concept of the design is to allow all inmates of an institution to be observed by a single watchman without the inmates being able to tell whether or not they are being watched. The panopticon refers to a particular spatial arrangement and distribution of bodies and visibility. (ex) a central tower where the few surveil the many. Internal/self discipline & internal gaze/self regulation because one is not sure when they are being surveilled.
