This week"s reading discusses the reasons behind why people living in rural and remote areas have the most difficult time accessing healthcare. Since there are fewer people living in these remote areas, there is a shortage of physicians and specialists because they don"t want to work in areas where they are in isolation from their colleagues. Physicians working in remote areas are also forced to be on-call far more often than those who work in urban areas which is just an added layer to their job. Since they are working primarily in isolation, they also must make judgement calls on their patients far more often and aren"t able to ask a colleague for their opinion.
