HREQ 3125 Midterm: Midterm prep - defining/explaining imperialism

167 views3 pages

Document Summary

Imperialism can be defined as the policy of the extension of a country"s power and/or influence by nearly any means necessary, diplomatic or otherwise. Imperialism, in one way, may be looked at through the lens of colonialism. For example, when the colonial superpower, britain, set out to countries such as india and south africa, they exerted their beliefs, political ideologies, cultural norms, and more, onto the people of these countries. This was done in part through military force, in part through sheer technological capabilities and advancement, and in part through their access to tools and resources that enabled them to take over these countries with relative ease. This was done by force, not by invitation of the host country, and most often, the host country was stripped of its identity, its resources were exploited, and its people were overruled politically and socially.
