5/26/2013 12:05:00 PM Part B: Self Management Philosophy  Have to have one and know where you are going Ethical Decision Making Process  Stage 1: Analysis o establish the facts o what are the issues? Are they legal or ethical o what are the options and what are the consequences?  Stage 2: Decision Making o Do not be rash, have all the facts o Assess the pros and cons of each option identified o Select the best option  Stage 3: Implement the decision o Manage the consequences General areas to consider:  physical safety and health of the athletes  responsibility of the coach  integrity in relation to others  respect for the athletes  honoring the respect for the sport NCPP Code of Ethics  Maintain the physical safety and health of your athletes o Site for competition/practice is safe o Be prepared for emergencies (EAP) o Avoid placing athletes in a situation of unnecessary risk beyond their capabilities  Coaching responsibly o Be competent: well prepared & up to date o Recognize the inherent power of your position as a coach o Be aware of your values and how it affects your behaviour o Act first in the best interest of your athletes o When in doubt: “do no harm”  Integrity in Relationships o Be honest, sincere and honorable o Be open minded and actively inquisitive o Develop self awareness  Respect for athletes o Every participant should be respected o Build mutual support and respect in your coaching o Be sensitive to those with special needs  Honoring the sport o Recognize and promote values of sport o Maintain dignity and exercise self control o Encourage and model honorable actions and intentions in sport Fair Play  Philosophy of coaching that is grounded in the belief that sport is a moral pursuit that should emphasize the value of participation  A pursuit of competitive excellence is emphasized  Lead by example  Respect the letter and spirit of the rules  Sport is but one aspect of life  Win with grace and lose with dignity  Feeling accepted should never be based solely on performance  Be genuine & play attention to your athletes personally and regularly  Reinforce the positive whenever possible Communication (one of the most important aspects of coaching)  Try to speak to each athlete every day  Meet with your athletes on a regular basis  Give feedback daily  Be honest!  Be tactful  Be positive  Learn to be a good listener  Communicate clearly and directly  Remember that gestures, facial expressions, and so on are a form of communication  Manage confrontations  Get feedback from the athletes on communication skills “It’s amazing what a team can accomplish when no one cares who gets the credit” Time management (important trait in coaches)  Causes of poor time management
