Six functions: primarily oriented toward speaker, the predominant function is expressive. Ouch! or i"m so embarrassed! : primarily oriented toward addressee, the predominant function is conative. Hey susie! : toward a third person, context, or events, the primary function is referential. The dow jones plummeted 500 points today, or nepal is between india and china. If the message is oriented primarily toward itself when it somehow calls attention to the very sounds and patterns that are used in its articulation this makes the poetic function predominate. Speech that involved rhyme, alliteration, repetition, parallelism, etc: toward the channel that carries it; whether social or physical, the associated function is phatic. Testing, 1, 2, 3 : toward the language itself, function is metalinguistic.
