Document Summary
Classify joint by the material that hold them together. Joint class based on the material holding the bones together. Joint type is based on the function of the joint (type of movement) Bones are connected by collagen fibers of connective tissue. Very short tissue fibers; can"t even see them! Ex. tibia and fibula are connected at the ankle by syndesmosis. Ex: epiphyseal plate (temporary hyaline cartilage joint) -- a joint when you are a child and teenager. Ex: joint between first rib and sternum (immovable) Add strength to joint, but allow some movement. Two bones, a capsule around them that joins them filled with fluid. Fluid allows nutrients to move more easily. Fluid allows a smoother movement as well. Bones are line with articular cartilage (hyaline cartilage) Helps smooth the rough ends of the bone. Some do not have large movements, but they do move a lot more than others.
