NATS 1670 Study Guide - Lysozyme, Aspirin, Antibody
Document Summary
Our immune system- an introduction: consists of 3 layers: (1) anatomical and psychological barriers (2) innate. Immunity and (3) adaptive immunity: most external carriers are stopped by the anatomical and psychological barriers (ex: skin) Innate immunity involves inflammation which aims to block external sources. Innate immunity is quick, but not very specific: adaptive immunity involves antibodies. Flushing (sweat/showering to prevent bacterial cells from remaining in the same spot) Fatty acids (hydrophobic on one side can enter into membranes, hydrophilic on the other side can integrate into water, like sweat or while taking a shower: gastrointestinal tract. Peristalsis (moving around the bacteria within the gut) Low ph (within the stomach bacterial cells in food will be killed: nasopharynx and eye. Specificity limited (one cell can recognize many pathogens) (2) specific (adaptive) In most cases, you will not be very sick because of the innate immunity.
