QUIZ FOR ALL INFORMATION ABOVE
LECTURE 1:
CHAPTER 1
KEY CONCEPTS
What are we searching for?
Initially, life as we know it, signatures of earth
Is it reasonable to imagine Life Beyond Earth
Using scientific principle, we can now address this question, we haven't found the answer
to life beyond earth, but we can ask the question expectation to find an answer in this life
time, no evidence as of yet but we (scientists) are very curious
DONT TALK ABOUT IT IN CLASS, NOT ON AN ICA = NOT ON THE EXAM
AVAILABLE ONLINE
SCIENCE FACT MEETING SCIENCE FICTION?
Some say we already have, going on the moon and such
We have not found evidence of life anywhere other than earth
No disputable proof of life else where
SIR ARTHUR C. CLARKE (1917-2008)
Wrote dozens and dozens of books
Sometimes I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we're not. In either
case, the idea is quite staggering.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR
Any sign of life
Macroscopic
Microscopic
Defining life is not easy (even on earth!)
Existence of earth on a given real estate is now almost detectable but that doesn't mean
they can respond back to us, it could be as small as bacteria
Searching for ANY science of life
Defining life itself is difficult
Life isn't as obvious as you think
Where do we search for this life?
We start right here on earth, if we need to look somewhere else we need to know
everything and anything about our planet, we must start here at home, start from a place of
knowledge and understanding
